Be a local digital influencer with Yelp

Make it a habit to visit Yelp occasionally and read the comments posted about local businesses. Click on “More reviews near you” to view recent posts. Put in your two cents about some of your favorite places and services. If you see a negative review, do not mention it in your review — it’s up to the business owner alone to respond. If the review is malicious, click on “flag this comment,” so that Yelp can review it.

While you’re there, check out the reviews of your business, and “claim” the listing if you’d like to edit the information or respond to a bad review.

Important: Don’t obsess or be angry about a negative comment, even if it’s unfair. Respond, but take a deep breath and follow Yelp’s guidelines. Remember, millions of people are now using Yelp to read reviews of local businesses.

If you’d like to review a business that isn’t on Yelp, you can add it to their database.

Bay West Supply, Inc website live…

Home page for Bay West SupplyCarson Park Design worked with Morse Media, our local Drupal programmer, to create a robust site for a regional supplier of janitorial products. The template is flexible, allowing our client to edit content without compromising the design, and Drupal is an open source, scalable platform that will allow for additional functionalities in the future. This means that Bay West Supply can augment the capabilities as they think of new tasks that the website can manage for them.

Use the full profile space on your Facebook page…

Facebook profile banner and thumbnailYou can turn your profile picture on your Facebook page into a 180 x 540 pixel banner. The “edit thumbnail” function will allow you to crop a square from the banner to serve as your thumbnail profile on posts and comments. The thumbnail crop tool allows you to select a 150 x 150 pixel square from your banner, and from this selection, Facebook generates a 50 x 50 pixel thumbnail. You can drag the “edit thumbnail” crop tool to any part of your banner.

Note: Since most business names will be difficult to read at thumbnail size, you might want to create a square within the banner that features an easily recognizable glyph, initials or other abstract from your branding, as in the example above.

Simple (and well-organized) bookmarking…

Instapaper: A simple tool to save web pages for reading later.

A simple tool to save web pages for reading later.

Our friend Bob Morse suggested a brilliant, easy-to-use app at a recent Humboldt Internet Marketing Group (HIMG) seminar. It’s called instapaper. You can mark sites of interest on-the-fly in your browser with a “read later” button and go back and read/organize your bookmarked pages at your leisure. No more being distracted by interesting websites when you’re trying to get work done. a simple drag-and-drop interface allows you to create folders and organize your sites-of-interest.

It’s available for both desktop and handheld devices.

Why be “profile.php?id=1428311190?” on Facebook?
Claim your real name…

Real name on FacebookIs your Facebook URL something like ”facebook.com/profile.php?id=1428311190?”? Did you know that you can claim a permanent name on Facebook? You could have facebook.com/john.doe, just go to the Facebook username page and see if it’s still available. If you and/or your company have a common name, no worries, just add “.page” so that you have something like www.facebook.com/john.doe.page.

Global exposure, local results…

You need one of those red pins.

Did you know your business and its location may already be on Google Maps, and, if it’s not, you can quickly add it through Google Places? Google Places (formerly known as Local Business Center) is a web application developed by Google that provides free listings for businesses on Google Maps. By claiming (only a business owner or authorized representative may claim a business listing) or adding your business listing you are increasing your business’s visibility on Google to those looking for your type of business in your area. It’s like free yellow pages advertising in the most popular phone book.

Vector logos: how to find and extract…

How to get vector logos from pdfsGraphic artists often face the problem of finding vector or high resolution bitmap corporate logos. Penetrating an opaque corporate veil in order to find an in-house graphics or marketing department  is often fruitless.

A quick search of the corporate website can yield results. Here’s how we do it:

If the site has a search function, enter pdf. If there is no search function, go to the site map and look for brochures, annual reports, or any other resources that would exist in a pdf format.

Download the pdf.

Open the pdf in Acrobat Reader and search for a logo. Note the page.

In Illustrator go to file|open. Select the pdf. A pop-up window will open with a thumbnail of page one. Select the page with a logo.

Click OK.

Elements on the page may be grouped and could include masks, compounds, and other special effects, so in the view menu, select outline. This puts you in a wireframe mode. Illustrations, photos and other bitmap images will now appear as bounding boxes.  Take the direct selection tool (the hollow arrow) and begin deleting all but the logo.

When the logo has been isolated, save the document as an Illustrator file (.ai).

There’s a database of corporate logos at Brands of the World, but use our method if you don’t find what you need there.

Update: We’ve also had good luck finding corporate logos recently at seeklogo.com.
